For Animals

Most Americans love cats and dogs and would never think of eating them. In fact, it is against the law to hurt these animals, and so many people treat them with kindness. Sadly, animals who are raised for meat, milk and eggs are usually treated very badly. Because people want to eat the foods they provide, farm animals are not protected from harm and are normally treated in the following ways:

  • Most farm animals in the United States spend their entire lives crammed inside huge, dirty and dark buildings called "factory farms."

  • Egg-laying hens, mother pigs and calves raised for veal usually live in small cages or crates and don't have room to stretch or turn around.

  • Turkeys and chickens are typically crowded indoors with thousands of other birds and never see sunlight or breathe fresh air.

  • Ducks and geese raised for foie gras are forced to eat so much food they have trouble walking, breathing and even moving around at all.

  • Dairy cows are usually treated like machines. They are forced to make enormous amounts of milk and often become very tired and ill.

  • Beef cows normally spend the last months of their lives in extremely cramped, dirty pens and often suffer from disease.

  • Farm animals are typically crowded onto big trucks so they can be taken to the stockyard or slaughterhouse. On these trips, farm animals are usually scared and stressed out, and many get hurt or sick.

  • Like humans and other animals, farm animals want to live long, healthy lives. As you can imagine, these animals are terrified when they reach the slaughterhouse. Here, they are often treated very badly and many feel great pain when they are killed.

By becoming a vegetarian, you can help keep farm animals safe from harm. If you can't be a vegetarian right now, there are also other ways to help. Click here to learn how you can make a difference for farm animals.
