Cattle Living Free
When they are allowed to live their lives they way they want to, cattle are very curious and social animals. Cattle like to live in small groups or families and become very upset when they are separated from one another. Cattle are very sensitive, especially mothers and babies. Mother cows, in fact, have very special relationships with their calves. They spend a lot of time watching out for their babies and keeping them happy and safe. Cattle communicate with one another through different "mooing" sounds. They also have a strong sense of smell that helps them find fellow cows. Cattle are very smart. When they have the freedom to explore the world around them, they are able to learn new skills and solve problems. They are also known to feel good about themselves when they do both of these things. Cattle have good memories and can remember all kinds of things from the past, including people, other animals, places, and experiences. All cattle, young or old, like to spend a lot of
time in large, open pastures where they can run, play, graze and explore.
Now the 19-year-old matriarch of our New York Shelter, Maya was the first calf that ever lived at Farm Sanctuary. When she was just days old, little Maya was abandoned at a stockyard. She was left to die because she was too sick to be sold. Horrified by finding Maya in such bad shape, the kind people who rescued the calf rushed her to a veterinary clinic. Happily, she got better quickly and has now spent many years teaching people that cows deserve to be treated with kindness. |
