Rabbits Living Free
Rabbits are really neat creatures. They seem very quiet, but when they are allowed to live free, they do all sorts of cool things that humans still need to learn all about. In the wild, rabbits spend a lot of time burrowing and making tunnels. They also like to huddle together inside their burrows, snuggling with and grooming one another. They venture out of their burrows, usually in the evening, to roam around and forage. A family group of rabbits will usually include one male (a Buck) and three to six females (does). Rabbits usually communicate with each other through touch and smell. Rabbits like and need to have plenty of space to explore, play and look for food if they are to be happy and healthy.
Barnaby and thirteen other rabbits were found huddled in cardboard boxes on a very big and busy highway. The bunnies were terrified by the roar of the cars speeding by and were in very real danger of being killed by a passing vehicle. Thankfully, a woman driving by noticed movement in the boxes and stopped to investigate. Shocked by what she found, the woman gently scooped up the rabbits and placed them in her car. Then she called Farm Sanctuary's New York Shelter for help. Grateful to have found their way to a place where they are safe and well cared for, Barnaby and his friends spend their days munching on fresh veggies, napping in the cool grass and romping across their barn.
