Turkey Living Free
When they are living free, turkeys can be seen as the bold, fascinating
and intelligent and creatures they really are.
In the wild, turkeys like to travel around in small flocks. Turkey
chicks stay with their mothers for many months before they have adventures
of their own. Their mothers, after all, are the ones who teach them
how to survive in the world.
Turkeys are very serious about choosing partners, or mates. Male
turkeys love to be admired for their big, puffy and beautiful feathers
and for the bright colors on their heads.
Turkeys are almost always talking to one another and use all sorts
of sounds to communicate with the other birds in their flocks. At
any given time, turkeys can be heard trilling, clucking or gobbling.
Like chickens, turkeys also like to stretch out in the sun and take
dust baths in the dirt.
Wild turkeys love to run and can even fly up into the trees to sleep.
Turkeys who live among kind people also love attention and will
even beg for their favorite treats. Sometimes, they even fall asleep
in the laps of human admirers.

Spruce and fourteen other newborn turkey chicks were found in a
trash heap behind an auction where birds are bought and sold. Their
rescuer heard them peeping from inside a crate, and after moving
some garbage aside, she saw the frightened baby birds staring up
at her. Several hours later, Spruce and her friends arrived at our
California Shelter and bounded out of the pet carrier into their
safe, cozy pen. Now, Spruce and her friends live each day to the
fullest, enjoying every moment of this beautiful life they never
expected to live. |
