Why do chickens lay eggs?

The Incredible Edible Egg? Not quite! Just like any other bird, chickens lay eggs not for us, but because it is how they bring baby chickens into the world. Mother hens care deeply for their babies. Have you ever heard of protective parents being called “mother hens”? Well, that’s because hens are famous for being great mothers! In fact, a mother hen will turn her eggs as many as five times an hour and cluck soothingly to her unborn chicks. Hens will even make private nests for their eggs in protected areas far away from predators. But what happens when humans start eating chicken eggs?

Because so many people eat chicken eggs, farmers raise lots and lots of hens in tiny cages and then collect the birds’ eggs and sell them. Most chickens in this country live squished together in cages so small, they can’t even stretch their wings or legs. Imagine living in a room just barely as big as you are and never being able to leave! That’s what life is like for most chickens in the U. S. As a result, many of these chickens get very upset and start pecking at each other, so farmers cut off the birds’ beaks when they are only a few days old! The hens live that way, all squished together, bored, scared, and in pain, for their whole lives. All just so humans can eat a few eggs! That’s not fair, is it?

So the next time you walk down the supermarket aisle, talk to your parent or guardian about eggs and how chickens are treated on factory farms. Talk to your family members about what you can do to help the chickens out. Some chicken-helpin’ ideas are:

  • Do a school report about eggs, and teach your classmates about what happens to chickens on factory farms.
  • Talk to your parents or guardians about trying some tasty egg-free foods.
  • Take a field trip or family vacation to one of Farm Sanctuary’s animal shelters, and see, firsthand, what a rescued chicken looks and acts like. Don’t forget to take photos for Show and Tell!

Chickens are very special animals, who love to roam free, hang out with their families and friends, and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. We think every animal deserves to be happy, don’t you?
