Who's the Smartest Farm Animal?

Animals are like people: each one is smart in his or her own way. Some people are good at math and others at writing. You may be a great artist while your sister is a talented ice skater. Animals are the same way. They are all good at different things!

Did you know that pigs are great problem-solvers? Some pigs at our shelters will "sit," just like a dog! And some pigs have even been known to play video games! When a pig doesn't get to exercise her brain, she can get very frustrated and sad. That's one of the reasons why life on a factory farm is so terrible for pigs.

Sheep have very good memories. Some sheep can remember the faces of up to 50 fellow flock members! And we think it's very smart that sheep move in groups to stay safe. That way, if a predator comes along, they have safety in numbers.

Chickens have their very own form of communication, similar to humans. They use different sounds to tell one another when food has arrived, or when danger is lurking around the corner. They've even been known to use their sounds to play tricks on one another!

Ducks wisely guard one another from danger by always keeping a look-out. If you see a group of ducks, look for the one who is off to the side, watching the surroundings for predators. This duck is the special guardian who is keeping all the others safe. Smart move!

As you can see, every animal is smart in his or her own way, just like humans! And each one deserves exercise, food and play to keep their body and mind healthy and strong. Just like you, Smarty-pants!
