Sheep & Goats on Factory Farms
Young sheep, called "lambs," are
usually killed for meat before they are one year old. These helpless
little animals are taken away from their mothers and sold at stockyards
and other markets. Being separated from their mothers is very frightening
for the tiny lambs.
Today's sheep grow much more wool than they ever would have in the
wild. All this wool, is usually sheared by people who want to use
it to make clothing and other products. Shearing is very scary for
the sheep who are often cut and injured when this is done.
When older sheep stop growing as much nice wool as they did when
they were younger, they are usually killed for meat.
Millions of goats are raised for meat on farms in the United States
and 500,000 more are raised for milk. Many are raised on large farms
that are beginning to look a lot like factory farms.
The lives of many goats are taken using a
kind of killing called "Halaal
slaughter." Goats cannot be stunned at slaughterhouses that
do this kind of killing, and so they often suffer horribly when they
die at these places.
Some goats are also used as living "lawnmowers" and
are often let loose in dangerous places where they do not have
protection from wild animals, bad weather or other things that
could hurt or kill them.
