Turkey on Factory Farms
Millions of turkeys are killed for food every year. Most of these
birds are raised indoors in dark, crowded buildings. These turkeys
never see sunshine or breathe fresh air and barely have enough room
to move around.
Turkeys used for food grow so large so quickly that they suffer
from many horrible and painful health problems.
Because they are so big and heavy, turkeys raised for food are also
unable to fly, run or mate. In fact, it is sometimes hard enough
for these turkeys to even walk.
Turkeys are driven to the slaughterhouse in crates stacked on the
backs of open trucks. On these trips, they are not protected from
bad weather and many freeze to death in the winter or die from heat
in the summer.
Sadly, those who live to reach the slaughterhouse do not have to
be stunned before they are killed. As a result, they often die very
slow and painful deaths.
Turkeys could live 7-10 years, but are usually killed when they
are just 5 months old.
