A male donkey is called a jack and a female donkey is called a jenny. When a female horse and a male donkey mate, the resulting offspring is called a mule. A donkey's gestation period is quite long because the baby donkey must be able to keep up with the herd and survive on her own shortly after she is born. Donkeys are not as easily spooked as horses.
