Pigs have tested higher on intelligence tests than most other animals.
Piglets love playing with balls and other toys, and they have fun
playing chase with each other.
Some animals will eat and eat until they are sick, but pigs know
when to stop, and only eat what they really need.
Pigs don't sweat like humans, so they roll around in the mud to
cool off. The mud also protects their skin from sunburn and insect
bites.
Pigs use their noses as digging tools to help them look for things
in the ground like grubs, snails, and plant roots.
Happy pigs rest for over 82% of the day.
Pigs enjoy close contact with people. Most love to be scratched
behind the ears and shoulders and will happily roll over for a belly
rub.
Pigs are very vocal. They regularly use more
than 20 different sounds to communicate with other pigs. Pigs have
even been known to "sing" to
each other.
Pigs are very clean animals. If given the
chance, they will keep their sleeping area clean and will designated
a spot as far away from their "bed" as possible for waste.
Pigs can run pretty fast -about 11 miles per hour.
A sow may search for days, sometimes walking for miles, to find
a suitable place to have her babies. Once she finds a good spot,
she will hollow out a nest and line it with grass and straw.
A group of pigs is usually called a "sounder."
